Vitamins and Stress Management

The pace of life in the 21st century has made the term “stress” very familiar to all of us.  Keeping our lives in balance requires active management of all facets of living, including a healthy diet, exercise, good sleep and proper supplementation. The key vitamins that have been identified as helping to reduce stress levels are vitamins A, B, C and E.

The B Complex vitamins often top the list of nutrients that help to relieve stress. Vitamin B1 or thiamine acts in the body to covert blood sugar or glucose to energy. Lack of this vitamin can lead to fatigue, anxiety and unhappiness. Vitamin B3 or niacin plays a key role in the normal functioning of the nervous system and the synthesis of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that keeps the mind calm

Vitamin B5 or pantothenic acid, along with folic acid and vitamin C, is required for the normal functioning of the adrenal glands. Located on top of the kidneys, these glands are responsible for the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. Pantothenic acid also removes toxins from the body. Vitamin B6 is essential for metabolism of amino acids, the building blocks of all proteins and hormones. Vitamin B12 is vital for red blood formation and deficiencies can lead to mood swings, irritability and confusion.

Vitamin C is also a key component in stress management. As an anti-oxidant, vitamin C neutralizes free radicals, which are produced in higher quantities when you are experiencing stress. Although still being researched, it appears that Vitamin E also acts as an anti-oxidant and assists in lowering stress.

Certain minerals are also helpful in the area of stress management, including magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium and zinc. The overall effect of mineral deficiency is a feeling of fatigue and weakness, and can include lack of concentration, nervousness, confusion and even depression.

Finally, restful and restorative sleep is also important to managing stress during the day. Proper supplementation of key vitamins, minerals and natural sleep formulas can be vital to relieving stress and leading a balanced, happier life.
