Vitamin D and Protection from Autoimmune Diseases

The demonstrable beneficial effects of vitamin D are growing as research continues into the role of the immune system in health. Those with autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and hypertension may benefit from increased vitamin D intake.

Vitamin D has been found to modulate T-cell response. Because autoimmune responses are mediated by T cells, sufficient levels of vitamin D allow autoimmune responses to be diminished. The results of several studies suggest that adequate vitamin D at the cellular level may significantly decrease the risk or progression of several autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
